Coverup
I'm going to try my best to take the mystery out of coverup tattoos.
Important things to remember:
- Be realistic. Cover-ups will always need to be darker as that is how we will cover it. If you want something lighter, I would recommend laser treatment before covering.
- Cover-ups need to be bigger than what you already have.
- I wasn't the artist who did your tattoo originally, so I am starting with someone else's work. I can make cover-ups look pretty, but they will never look as good as a fresh tattoo on clean skin.
- Depending on the areas you need covering, it depends on what we do. For instance, a tattoo on the hand doesn't give me as much space around it as a cover-up on an arm.
For a nice clean coverup, faded is always better. If I can't have it faded, the design then needs to have skin spaces in between. The more space, the better.
I can go a tone or two lighter. That's it. Cover-up work normally uses the darker parts of what you have as the darker parts of the cover-up, and the lighter parts or skin breaks for the details.
So there are two ways to do this. I will need to use color techniques for both. I can use grey color to cover most things, or if you want color: dark blue, dark purple, or green gives you the best chance.
I HAVE to go bigger than your design. This is how coverups work. Below i've added a few examples so you can see where the old tattoo would sit.
That depends. My first question is, could you stand to keep the tattoo and have it reworked? This is always the best option. If that's a no, could you stand to have laser? Is it that bad? Really ask yourself if the tattoo is bad, or can you live with it or add bits to make you love it more? A cover-up is normally a last resort. I wouldn't advise a cover-up as a good idea if you have just fallen out of love with what you have. They tend to be more for "I need this gone" sort of cases.
The honest answer to this really depends. Most of the time I won't have to touch up a coverup however, if your tattoo is especially difficult or dark, it may require another session. (These are free).
Something with lots of lines will help, as will darker areas in your idea. Any light areas must be on clean skin areas.
That answer depends. It depends if the original artist or lazor has caused scars. It also depends on what we are covering. A small faded name will take a lot less time and work than a big dark tribal piece.
Absolutely not. You will be very limited on what ideas will work. I can discuss these with you.
Yes! I will need multiple reference photos sent so I can see what you like. The most important thing is making sure you will like the cover-up, otherwise it is pointless adding to what you have. I won't confirm anything before I can see if the cover-up will work. Once I've had a look, I will either send you the design or ask you more questions.
No. There will be some instances where we have no options available to us. This is rare; normally, it's more of a limited option situation. If you don't like the options available to you, we will have to look into laser removal first.
Here's an example of how it works
